Chasing a feeling and running round in circles

Clearly people run for different reasons. To get fit, to stay fit. To de-stress, to motivate, to get outside, to join in, to shift some pounds, to have a goal, to get to work…

Activities of choice

Personally, I run to feel free. To feel the speed on my body, the capacity in my limbs, and to feel lithe. I run to be exhilarated by the elements, to find myself in beautiful places and to take myself there under my own steam.

Sometimes though, swimming’s the activity of choice…to move my body in different ways; the hip circling of breaststroke legs, the rotation and stretch of crawl arms, the opening of backstroke. I love the suspended, free flowing propulsion…and to experience the fabulous and fluid creative mental flow that occurs in water (although granted, jumping in the shower can – on occasion – be a fine substitute to allow creative thoughts form…although missing the exertion somewhat!).

And I choose yoga to feel long and strong. To feel calm and breathed. To feel balance in my body and to feel supple. And arguably to think no thoughts (!), but to be embodied in the physical…

The feeling that we want to feel

But whatever activity we carry out, we’re chasing a feeling. Something that we want to experience in our bodies, some in our connection with ourselves…

Maybe you’re hooked on the feeling of being energised, or ‘exercised’. Maybe your seeking to feel strong and powerful or perhaps you wish to feel fast on your feet! Perhaps feeling lithe, slender or sexy is your driver?!

Maybe you want to feel satisfied with yourself, a sense of accomplishment, hard-worked or maybe you want to feel connected to yourself, or to others?

Whatever is driving you is fine – it’s your reason…

Round and round in circles

And if it’s running that you choose to find the feeling, as it often is with me, perhaps you find yourself chasing round in circles to find that feeling…?

Round the same route, over and over…or around the track, over and over and over again. Certainly I do…to feel the feeling, over and over…

Do you know what feeling your chasing?
